Clearing in Lacrosse - Why So Important?

Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse National Program Director, Brian Lalley, discusses, Clearing in Lacrosse - Why So Important?:

Just like the forecheck in hockey, a good offense is going to understand the value in riding hard against an opponent’s clear. Clearing is one of the top priorities of any team I coach. I find it so important for a few reasons:

  1. If you lose the ball in the clear and your opponent gets the ball back, that is a two possession swing. That is a possession you should have had and your opponent should not have.
  2. Loses the ball in the clear can crush your energy/momentum/spirit. After playing defense and earning a stop, you’re right back to playing defense again.
  3. A turnover in the clear generally leads to an unsettled situation. Since the defense isn’t matched up in the unsettled, it’s a much higher scoring percentage situation.

Really understanding the importance of the clear will hopefully bring more focus and effort to your practices for clearing. I’ve found that when players really understand the importance of something, they’re more likely to give more focus and consistent effort.
