Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse National Program Director, Brian Lalley, discusses, Accountability:

Most goals of individuals and teams are achievement oriented and measured through performance. Your individual goal might be to score 20 goals or more this season or to average more than 8 ground balls per game. A team goal might be to advance past the third round of the state tournament or to clear each game higher than 85%. Setting goals are important as they give us something to reach for. For both individual and team improvement, accountability is a very important component to staying on track to progressing the techniques/skills involved in growth and development required to attain those goals.

As a former Ohio State Lacrosse player, Nick Myers has been a person that has had a big impact on my technical lacrosse knowledge and ability. More importantly in my mind, his relentless approach to improvement along with many other lessons has influenced my growth formally as a player and now as a coach.

A couple years ago at the US Lacrosse Convention, Coach talked about leading the U-19, USA team to gold and their first mission as a staff. They presented to the best American players at that age level at every position in the country that the first thing they were going to hold players accountable for scooping a ground ball with two hands. If a player scooped with one-hand at any time, that would be one pushup. How players responded to the push-up they were instructed to do quickly took the tryout roster from 140 to 50 in one tryout session.

I have adopted the one pushup rule in our clinics, club teams, and our summer camps. The goal is to not to punish players for where they fell short. It is for them to understand that we are a product of our daily habits and you as an individual are part of the whole. When players start to recognize the skills involved with being a better player and hold themselves and each other accountable to the standards of your program/mission, that is where the daily habits are energized.
