Xcelerate Lacrosse: Lacrosse Rules
Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse National Program Director, Brian Lalley, discusses, Lacrosse Rules:
As a lacrosse player, it is important to be aware of the rules of the game and work to operate within those. Below are some common technical fouls in the game of boys lacrosse. Some result in change of possession while others result in a 30 second penalty.
Warding Off - When a player cradles with one hand, he cannot use his free hand/arm to deter a pursuing defender. When a player sets a ward to protect his stick, you can only absorb pressure from a defender’s pursuit. A warding off call results in a change of possession.
Offside - In the game of boys lacrosse, there must always be 4 players on the defensive half and 3 players on the offensive half of the field. It does not matter what position, as long as those stipulations are met. If the team with possession is offsides, it results in a change of possession. If a defending team is offsides, it’s a 30-second technical penalty.
Illegal Offensive Screen - A player can set a screen / pick as long as his feet are still and no wider than shoulder width. If a player’s feet are moving or he extends pressure with his upper body / hands, it is an illegal screen. The result is a change of possession.
Crease Violation - Offensive players are not allowed in the crease area surrounding the goal with or without the ball. The result of a crease violation is a change of possession.
