Success vs Failure

Xcelerate_Nike_Boys_Lacrosse_Drive

Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse National Program Director, Brian Lalley, discusses, Success vs. Failure and Lacrosse:

There are so many different messages of how to embrace failure to grow. Improvement isn’t something you can wish. It takes continuous, focused repetitions with effort. It takes the humility and patience to keep putting yourself as an individual and as a team in vulnerable situations seeking growth.

The attached video is a great perspective on this concept from an author’s experience with success and failure. Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of the book, “Eat, Pray, Love,” which was very popular and eventually was made a movie. When deciding to write the next book, Elizabeth was briefly crippled by the pressure of following up her great success.

Her follow-up bombed and she was fine with it because she was “home,” as she referred to writing. She will continue to write and some will fail. “I will always be safe from the random hurricanes of outcome as long I know where I rightfully live.” “I loved writing more than I hated failing at writing, I loved writing more than my own ego, I loved writing more than I loved myself.”

Lacrosse is a sport that is full of places to fail and succeed. You can catch or drop the ball. You can hit the net or miss the net on a shot. You can scoop or not scoop the ground ball and you can win or lose the game. All possible outcomes will be experienced by every lacrosse player who has or will ever play. If experiencing the game of lacrosse is your, “home,” like it is mine, you can use failure as knowledge and continue to find joy and satisfaction in pursuing a better version of yourself. The players and teams who continue to make themselves vulnerable to failure seeking growth on a foundation of passion are ultimately drivers of their own improvement and satisfaction in this great sport.
