Why would what you believe impact how you improve, perform or connect as a team? When you break it down, it makes a lot of sense and can really unlock the potential of yourself and/or your team.

For a few years, I have listened to Simon Sinek talk about many topics. One is about finding your why. He breaks down humans and the way we think, behave and interact going all the way to the beginning of our species. He explained that back in early days, there were a lot more outside forces that were out to harm us including weather and dangerous animals. To protect ourselves, humans bonded together to maximize the collective strengths of the group. One person would stay awake and watch over the perimeter when others slept, sacrificing for the the others knowing they would do the same when it was their turn.

This self-sacrifice leads to trust and it’s the feeling that makes us feel safe. When we feel safe, we are more likely to take risks, explore our own vulnerability and maximize our strengths for the betterment of the others. People continually try to find these, “Circle’s of Safety,” as Sinek calls them. We find our circle of safety through surrounding ourselves with others who believe what we believe.

The unique part of an athletic team or even a business is you have people coming together from so many different core beliefs. When a team communicates their beliefs and understands why they’re important to collective growth and success, that’s where you see true growth, alignment and fulfillment. It is something I have made a much higher priority with the teams I coach and BELIEVE it’s made a difference!
