Coach Profile
Co-Director
Paul and Kathy Settles
Having spent the first fifteen years of their careers with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Paul and Kathy began coaching at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in 2004, where they have helped to bring the CMS men's and women's programs to national prominence. Kathy is a PTR certified professional, while Paul is a USPTA P1 certified teaching professional and a graduate of the USTA High Performance Coaching program. Kathy and Paul have collectively won 13 USTA National Championships - including four together - and have earned USTA year end #1 rankings in three different divisions.
In his eleven seasons, Coach Paul Settles has established CMS Stags Tennis as one of the very elite in Division III. In the past five years, the Stags have earned top five year-end national rankings, and have been top three in two of the last three years. The Stags have won 49 consecutive conference matches and five consecutive outright conference titles, both program bests.
Paul Settles is a USPTA certified P1 professional and a graduate of the USTA High Performance Coaching Course. In December of 2008, Settles was named coach of Team USA in the International University Challenge, leading six top collegiate American players in an eight team international competition in France. Settles also serves as a coach for the Southern California Maze Cup Team (Boys and Girls 16s and 18s) against Northern California and is a member of the Player Services staff for the LA Open, an ATP World Tour event.
Settles has served as a volunteer member of two USTA national committees, the Collegiate and Adult & Senior Competition Comittees. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and is co-chair of the ITA Small College Operating Committee and task force on NCAA Legislative Issues. In 2006, Settles was named the USPTA Collegiate Coach of the Year by the California division, and in 2009 he was named West Region ITA Coach of the Year.
Before coming to CMS, Paul Settles served as Director of Player Services of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the governing body of men’s professional tennis. At the ATP, Settles’ wide range of responsibilities included supervision of the Player Services Department, staff liaison for the ATP Player Council, Player Leadership Committee, and Board of Directors; and serving as founding committee member of the ATP Medical Services Committee.
Still an active player himself in the adult and family divisions, Settles is winner of 12 USTA National Championships. Paul, and wife Kathy - an Assistant Coach for CMS women's team - have four children: Ryley, Christian, James, and Caleb.
