LACROSSE HITCH MOVE
Xcelerate Nike Lacrosse National Program Director, Brian Lalley, discusses techniques for the hitch move:
There are many different ways to score in a lacrosse game. One of the best ways is off of ball movement when the defense is rotating. If your team has athletic players that dodge to score, a defense must slide to them and stop the ball. Therefore, there will be guys they have to leave open.
If a defense slides to one side of the field, generally the open guy offensively is on the other side. As we move the ball to the weak side, we want this backside player to catch into triple threat so he can evaluate the play.
Our options with a rotating defense are to shoot, pass or re-dodge. If we recognize a defensive approach to our bottom foot, a great move is the hitch move. The key is to convince the approaching defender you are shooting by stepping hard on your front foot as you fake a shot. If he flinches or stops his feet, re-engage to the middle of the field and finish towards the goal.
Generally, players have the most difficulty coordinating footwork with the fake shot. Start slow and progressively build speed. This is such a great move because it allows you to get the middle of the field where we have a much better angle than down the side. As a back side player, always give yourself enough space to catch into triple threat and quickly evaluate the situation.
